Colour Coding Prevents Cross-Contamination

Date: 21-11-2018

You never want to use the same cloth, that you used in cleaning the toilets, in cleaning the kitchen where you prepare food. Using the same set of cleaning supplies to different areas can increase the risk of cross-contamination. Cross-contamination is when you bring the germs and bacteria from one place to another. This happens when you use the same set of cleaning supplies in different areas.

This is where colour coding system comes in. Colour coding your cleaning supplies can reduce the risk of cross-contamination by assigning a particular colour per area. Nowadays, you can now buy mops, cloths, and buckets in different colours. Your chemicals can be colour coded as well through labels, wall charts, and dispensing equipment.

Green Rhino suggests the following colour coding:

RED For the bathroom, toilet, urinals, restroom floors
BLUE For general cleaning or low-risk areas like offices, hallways, desks
GREEN For food service and preparation areas
YELLOW For infectious areas or high-risk areas
 WHITE For operating theatres

Applying a colour coding system to your cleaning supplies:

  • Reduces the risk of cross-contamination
  • Increases safety amongst your cleaners, customers, visitors, and employees
  • Makes training your cleaners easier
  • Achieves a high level of health and safety in your facility
