Basics of Window Cleaning
The Right Set of Tools
You need to have the right set of equipment to clean windows properly.
Below is a list of items you need as a start.
- Squeegee - A good squeegee comes in three parts - handle, channel and rubber. The rubber can be replaced once it gets worn out. The most popular size is 35cm.
- Washer - A good washer usually comes in two parts - t-bar and a sleeve. A good t-bar must have an ergonomic design for ease of handling. There are different types of sleeves depending on the window cleaning job you have to tackle. The most popular size for a washer is 35cm.
- Window Cleaning Bucket - this is where you will mix your glass cleaning chemical and water. It must be big enough to fit your squeegee and washer. It must be durable enough to hold a good amount of water and chemical and for multiple uses.
- Scraper - You need a scraper for dealing tough jobs like insect marks or window stickers. You must know how to use a window scraper correctly to avoid permanently damaging the glass.
- Glass Cleaning Chemical - A good glass cleaning chemical does not streak and can tackle the dirtiest type of window cleaning job
- Cloths & Rags - It is recommended to use a microfibre cloth for wiping off excess water from the edge after using a window squeegee.
THE BASIC PROCESS
- Fill your window cleaning bucket with clean warm water half full. Add and mix your choice of window cleaning chemical into the bucket. Amount depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation.
- Dip your window washer into the bucket filled with water and chemical.
- Scrub your window with your window washer. Make sure you give it a good rub. This is the time to use a scraper.
- SCRAPER TIP If there is any dirt that is stubborn, which cannot be removed by your washer or squeegee alone, a window scraper is needed. You must use a scraper made especially for window cleaning. Make sure that its blade is not bent, chipped or rusted. If not sure, just replace it with a new one! Not worth the risk of damaging the glass! When you are scraping, wet the glass with soapy water. Test in a small part to check if your scraper will move smoothly against the glass. If it feels like it is rough, then you must not continue. When scraping, you must do it in a forward motion (not backwards) to prevent scratching the glass. Scrape forward then lift the scraper and then scrape forward again!
- After scrubbing, you use the squeegee to get the water off the glass. Starting from the top left, move your squeegee to across the window to the right without stopping. Wipe your squeegee dry with your cloth. Repeat this process on the other wet part of the window. Do an overlap in between strokes to make sure you don’t leave any wet parts.
- Once you are finished with the window, check the edge and sides of your window for some water left. Wipe it with a dry microfibre cloth.
- And you are done!
